Vegan and vegetarian diets have become increasingly popular in today’s day and age. As people embrace healthy lifestyles, vegan and vegetarian diets have become the best choices. Often confused to refer to the same thing, vegan and vegetarian may be similar in some ways but they have some differences.
As the name suggest, a vegetarian is a person who prefers to obtain their nutrients from plant sources rather than animal sources. However, they can still eat some products from animals like eggs and milk. There are different types of vegetarians which include:
- Lacto vegetarians: these vegetarians eat dairy products but avoid eggs, meat, poultry and seafood
- Ovo vegetarians: these vegetarians eat eggs but avoid dairy products, meat, poultry and seafood
- Pesco vegetarians: this is a semi-vegetarian diet where people can eat fish and seafood while avoiding poultry and meat
Vegans are not just people interested in living a healthy lifestyle as much as vegetarians. Vegans are people who are passionate about animal welfare. What drives them to a vegan diet is their moral reasons about animals. Besides avoiding foods that are primarily manufactured from animals, they also avoid products made from any part of an animal. This includes even animal skin. Vegans don’t wear leather and suede because they are made from animal skins. In addition, they don’t use fabrics that are made from the byproducts of animals such as wool, silk and the like. In the process of making these fabrics, animals are harmed and vegans cannot live with that. Last but not least, vegans also avoid cosmetic products made from animal products or tested on animals and will go for cruelty-free cosmetics and beauty products.
In simple terms, vegan is the more stringent form of vegetarian diet that avoids animal products of any kind in totality.
The difference between Vegan and Vegetarian
1. Foods to eat
Primarily, vegan and vegetarian diets emphasize more on eating plant-based foods rather than foods sourced from animals. However, a vegetarian can eat products that come from an animal such as eggs and dairy but avoid others such as meat. Many people choose this form of vegetarian diet because of religious restrictions which prevent them from eating a certain type of animal. On the other hand, a vegan eats no animal products at all. They don’t eat any products from animals and their diet is made up of only plant-based sources.

As mentioned, vegans are not just driven by a need to live a healthy lifestyle but also their moral compass which prevents them from using any byproducts from animals. These include cosmetic products, fabrics like silk or wool and any other byproduct from animals. A vegan tends to follow a set of clear cut rules concerning animal products. On the other hand, a vegetarian can use products that are made from animals. They can wear leather and suede which a vegan cannot.
